Exit stage left, Mr Permatan is history.

Strange how so many political careers end in ultimate failure, the resignation of Peter Hain was long overdue, the delay only serving to highlight the breathaking arrogance of the man and the barren creed he represents. Many people will say good riddance but his departure should not be seen as an end in itself, rather a tentative first step in the long process of reasserting true democracy in our country.

The corrupt or incompetent of any political persuasion must learn that there will be no hiding place from the wrath of those they have failed. Our Country is in a mess which has taken several years to manifest itself on account of the spin that has been deployed to hide the truth. The current administration has been a triumph of PR, slick marketing and presentation over substance and delivery. Whole swathes of commerce have been sidelined, taxed and regulated to the point where the burden is all but unbearable. In so doing these productive worthwhile enterprises have become financially emasculated whilst the beaurocracy that increasingly bears down on them has experienced explosive growth.

In the midst of this the Government has cosied up to the corporate crocodiles who outsource to Asia but assiduously feed the party coffers, waxing fat on the spoils. It necessarily follows that every action has a reaction, the Chinaman breaking wind in Shanghai causing a tidal wave in Los  Angeles springs to mind. The point has been reached where this behaviour and the feeding frenzy of greed it unleashes has tipped the job over the edge and people are finally at this late hour beginnining to realise how they have been seduced by the biggest propaganda machine since Stalin.

The client state ensures the docility of the dependent, giving them just enough to keep them docile whilst ensuring that they are financially penalised if they attempt to escape the trap they have fallen into. The corporate crocodiles and city fat cats are nurtured and cosseted to ensure that the party machine is well oiled by the tribute that issues from its patrons.

It is the silent hard working independent minority in the middle who are treated with such contempt and disdain by the Government because they are not the sector that will ensure its political survival. The whole rotten edifice of this awful unsucessful Government is errected around the need to win elections, not service to all the people of our country. Hopefully at long last the worm has turned and the Government is set to feel the backlash it so richly deserves. The signs are certainly positive given the encouragingly sparky debate that took place on newsnight last night.

The real ground will be won when the inescapable issue of ehthical party funding is robustly addressed. The long suffering taxpayer must not be saddled with the open ended cheque that they will be signing were they forced to fund political parties. Donations from whatever source must be transparent and legitimate. The real solution to party funding lies in persuading party members to pick up the tab for their own activities,  to recruit members in sufficient numbers the blighters would have to perform in a satisfactory manner. This route would also expose them to the same financial pressures and constraints suffered by the population in the real world. A little genuine financial adversity would do them no harm whatsoever.

MP’s are arrogant and untouchable.

I am taking the unusual step of copying in full a letter published in The Western M orning News from Mr R Kane of Dousland which strikes an absolute chord with my current train of thought with regard to less than acceptable performance of the majority of MP’s to the great detriment of our Country and its People. I have always admired veteran MP Gwyneth Dunwoody for her no nonsense ehthical approach to her duties, a rare exception indeed.

Western Morning News January 23rd 2008.

Labour veteran Gwyneth Dunwoody gave an accurate picture of yesterdays and todays MP’s ,as quoted recently in a national newspaper

“I have been in the House long enough to see the coming and going of many inadequate personalities. I have seen those on both sides of the House who have been promoted for various reasons. I  have seen the crawlers.  I have seen those who have used sex. I have seen those whose sexual preferences were of interest to others. I have seen those who have demonstrated great commitment to their own interests, irrespective of the political patries they were supposed to represent”

Every year, MP’s vote for their own selfish, inflation busting pay rises with impunity and great arrogance, despite every other public sector employee having to settle for a below inflation pay rise.

What are todays MP’s really worth? Who would care if they disappeared off the face of the earth tomorrow? Who would save one from a burning building or a swollen flooded torrent?

They’re always telling us they know what is good for us, but look over our once-great nation, that looks more like a Third World country every day under their incompetent guidance.

They took us to war in Iraq and Afghanistan despite great public feeling against such a disastrous move and thousands are killed and maimed.

Everything they get their meddling hands on has disastrous results. The NHS, crime, immigration, education, roads, and public transport are a few examples of their incompetence and arrogance over the past and present.

Our new Prime Minister, just like many before him, informed us that things would change, they would listen to public opinion and future dealing would be more honest and transparent. What happened next? You guessed it – more sleaze, denials and incompetence from government departments and senior Cabinet members refusing to resign, saying they had not been told about the problem and blaming the cock-up on a junior departmental employee.

MP’s have lost the plot, but do they care? No , of course not. They remain arrogant, unaccountable and untouchable, and will become even more so in the European Union.

R Kane.

Whatever goes on in the mind of a judge?

Reading the papers this week flagged up a couple of compensation claims cases with rather different outcomes. One involved the National Service victims used as guinea pigs in the testing of chemical warfare agents at Porton Down. For over forty years the MOD has tried to wriggle out of accepting resposibilty for the appalling health consequences suffered in the interim by the unfortunate victims.

The other high profile case involved a relatively minor celebrity who was allegedly injured when she fell off the bed during a vigourous bout of lovemaking. The unfortunate injuries suffered  resulted in hospitalisation and consequently she sadly became a victim of the hospital acquired superbug MRSA. Without doubt the life threatening condition caused her incredible suffering and has had a lasting effect on her health. Quite rightly the NHS Trust involved was sued. This effectively means that the taxpayer picks up the tab for damages awarded.

The outcome of the two cases was remakably different and encapsulates the inequality of our legal system. In the case of the Porton Down victims those that have survived thus far (reportedly between 3 and 4 hundred) Share a compensation pot that will award each individual in the region of £3,000. One of the unfortunate victims in typical fashion was quoted as saying that the admission of wrong on the part of the MOD was more important than financial recompense. In that case why has this appalling injustice taken so long to rectify?

In the case of the unfortunate celebrity who’s main claims to fame have been as dizzy eye candy in a raucus sitcom and an infamous “trout pout” suffered as a result of botox injections going wrong the outcome was markedly different.

Without doubt the Lady had a legitimate claim which was undoubtedly pursued with vigour by a team of ambulance chasing solicitors and barristers. However the outcome of a compensation award of £5,000.000 beggars belief.

What is it that makes one human beings undoubted suffering different from another’s to the tune of such a serious amount of money. Is it down to the ability to access the best of legal advice or is the perception of “celebrity” a marketable commodity in legal circles. Awards on this scale are an insult to Service men and women who in the course of serving their country suffer the most horrendous physical and mental scars. To add insult to injury some of these unfortunates have also succumbed to MRSA in our filthy hospital wards. The difference is that their injuries are assesed according to the MOD’S “standard tarrif” which ensures that compensation is pegged at a very low level indeed. It should be remembered that these victims were wrecked in the service of their Country not as highly rewarded “celebrities” who tend to concentrate on serving their own ends.

The judges who deliver such perverse decisions appear answerable to no one. It is sincerely to be hoped that professional detachment shields them from any pangs of guilt they may feel about the lack of natural justice they dispense.
